The Port of Klickitat County, WSDOT, and partners are proposing a grade separation project to provide freight and automobile access into the port’s Bingen Point property over the main Burlington Northern and Santa Fe rail line. The proposed project will improve access to regional employers including Insitu (Boeing) Custom Interface, and SDS Lumber. This project will replace the SR 20/Sharpes Corner signalized intersection with a modified roundabout, a bypass lane for traffic heading west to Anacortes and a single-lane tunnel for traffic heading east from Anacortes towards Burlington. A second roundabout would also be built half a mile to the south on SR 20, to address traffic flow problems at the Miller-Gibralter intersection, which could be increased once traffic flow is improved by the Sharpes Corner roundabout.

This project will complete corridor improvements by constructing a new arterial roadway between a newly constructed roundabout and an existing arterial. The project will relieve congestion and reliance on an existing 2-lane substandard rural roadway in poor condition and allow for substantial industrial and commercial development to occur near Interstate 5.
