The Port of Klickitat County, WSDOT, and partners are proposing a grade separation project to provide freight and automobile access into the port’s Bingen Point property over the main Burlington Northern and Santa Fe rail line. The proposed project will improve access to regional employers including Insitu (Boeing) Custom Interface, and SDS Lumber. The project will improve safety by providing an additional vehicle access point that does not have a rail conflict.

This project will replace the SR 20/Sharpes Corner signalized intersection with a modified roundabout, a bypass lane for traffic heading west to Anacortes and a single-lane tunnel for traffic heading east from Anacortes towards Burlington.
A second roundabout would also be built half a mile to the south on SR 20, to address traffic flow problems at the Miller-Gibralter intersection, which could be increased once traffic flow is improved by the Sharpes Corner roundabout.

The project constructs a new rail access route that eliminates existing conflicts with high-speed intercity passenger rail and a major rail freight corridor. It will relocate facilities to provide a new entryway into the port terminals, and provide internal storage capacity that will accommodate multiple unit-trains at one time (trains more than 150 rail cars in length).

This project will finish the SE 1st Street/Lake Road corridor between 164th Avenue and 192nd Avenue. The The project will include 3 lane section between approximately 168th and 176th Ave. where the right-of-way is narrow. East of roughly 176th Av. the roadway will be 5 lanes with bike lanes and detached sidewalks, the intersections of 192nd and 164th Avenues will include additional approach lanes.

This project will complete corridor improvements by constructing a new arterial roadway between a newly constructed roundabout and an existing arterial. The project will relieve congestion and reliance on an existing 2-lane substandard rural roadway in poor condition and allow for substantial industrial and commercial development to occur near Interstate 5.
